Hey guys i'm looking for new hosting for my personal design portfolio. Host must support php and ruby on rails development. So far i have been looking at Media Temple and DreamHost. Any suggestions or advice is very much appreciated.

    thanks

Check out hostmysite.com. They have amazing tech support (including real-time), and pretty sure they support those two technologies. However, given your requirements your best bet might be Media Temple. Grid hosting is awesome, but I personally didn't dig the experience with them too much. Let us know what you decide!

I’ve used Dreamhost for the last few years and, despite the occasional downtime, they’ve been pretty good. Fairly responsive to support requests, fantastic list of one-click installs (I’m lazy), support for RoR, etc. etc. None of my sites (including Refresh DC) are that trafficked, so downtime isn’t a tremendous concern (just a minor annoyance).

But for the cost, I’ve been relatively happy. I’m using MediaTemple for business/client sites, and it’s been pretty solid.

I use hostingzoom. I have a reseller account, which they have now split off into a division called resellerzoom. They have the occasional hiccup, but do have 24 hour support.

MediaTemple sure gets a lot of hype, but personally all my experience with them has been quite poor. Ok, so they have real people to do support. But both the low and high-end accounts I have setup with them have been VERY slow in terms of performance. On their Grid Servers, I did a project that required PHP5 and once I upgraded to PHP5 from the default PHP4, they refused to support it any longer. Seems very strange since PHP is pretty standard.

I have been using SLHost, and been pretty happy with them. I have the caveat that I have been using their VPS service (virtual private server) -- it's a bit more than what most people probably want to pay for hosting (with modern expectations), but it gives me my own virtual server, and I can stick a bunch of sites on it, and have full control over it (as, well, it's a virtual server).

I keep the rates reasonable by paying once every 6 months in advance, which they give stupid deals for (like 50% off the cost). They have all the "standard" hosting tools these days, and then some, and support a ton of software packages. Due to the fact that you have your own server, if they don't have it, you can install versions of whatever you want, as long as you are comfortable doing it yourself.
