    Hi All,

I'm a Ruby on Rails n00b that has some experience with HTML and very little with PHP/MySQL. I'd really love to get introduced to Ruby on Rails. The only problem is that I can't find any training centers, classes, workshops or anything of the like here in the DC area. Does anyone know of any classes or training that are offered through local colleges or public/private organizations? I'm even open to people who can teach one on one. The best part about is that If I could find a suitable class(es) to get into I'm certain I could convince my employer to pay for it all.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions.
    Many Thanks,
    Jacob

    Hey Jacob,

We (Collective Idea) have been doing Rails training in the US and Austrailia for a number of companies large and small.

We’re available for on-site training, and you can email us for details. We’ll also be doing a yet-unannounced training in Michigan this June, and would love to have you come up.

Sorry to pimp my company, but you asked for it ;-)

Northern Virginia Community College has a 3 day class on Ruby on Rails . I took the Intro to Ruby class with the same instructor. While it wasn’t the most illuminating course (I learnt more online on my own time), it was a good chance to talk to someone who had experience working with Rails.

@Daniel Maybe Collective Idea could do a roadshow. Tour the country and give Rails workshops! ;-)

Very very tempting. We'll see what we can do after this one.

    Hey Jacob,
I've been looking into learning Ruby recently myself. Here's a couple of resources that I've discovered in the past week or so.

Lynda.com offers a couple of Ruby on Rails classes in their online training library:

    http://movielibrary.lynda.com/html/modListing.asp?sid=229

Pragmatic Programers, LLC offers several books on the subject, from beginner to advanced, including this one which I bought from Borders earlier this week. It's very basic but I figured that should make it easier to learn:

    http://www.pragprog.com/titles/fr_ltp/learn-to-program

You can probably find a lot more info at the Ruby site here: http://www.rubyonrails.org/

    Good luck!

    Hey all,

I just started developing in RoR a few months back and am very excited to continue learning more advanced techniques. A co-worker and I just finished up the Advanced Rails Studio that the Pragmatic Programmers held out in Reston. I'd be very interested in participating in a local Rails group if there is such one in our area.

I've started a Rails group on The DC Technology Network ning site. If you are interested in exchanging resources, knowledge, etc. join here: http://dctechnology.ning.com/group/rubyonrails

Edit: Sorry, to add my company is in need of a front end developer and we are very much turning in to a RoR shop. Could be a great opening for a web developer to gain some RoR experience. Let me know if you or know anyone that might be interested.

    Take care,
    Luke

We just announced details of Collective Idea’s June Ruby on Rails training:

I’d love to see a group from Refresh DC come up. I promise it’ll be a great time.
